Our process
How a project runs, in five stages
Every property is different, so the details vary. This is how a project with us generally runs, and most of what makes lighting good is decided in the first two stages.
-
Design consultation
We start by learning about the property and about you: how you use the outdoor spaces, what you would like to see from inside the house and from the street, what has never looked right, and what matters most.
A consultation does not have to happen at night. We are very capable of designing lighting in daylight.
Most initial design consultations are complimentary. Projects requiring extensive design work, construction plans or detailed design documentation may require a design fee based on scope.
-
Design and proposal
We develop a lighting design for the property and present it with a clear proposal. The design is where the important decisions are made: what to light and what to leave alone, and the intensity, color quality, beam control and glare control appropriate to each part of the property.
The level of documentation suits the project. Where it makes sense, a design can be planned in phases.
-
Professional installation
Our technicians install the system and aim fixtures as they go, based on the intended effect. We are often very close to where we need to be, or exactly there, before darkness ever falls.
-
Final adjustments
When a nighttime review is appropriate, we evaluate the completed system after dark and make adjustments where needed. Sometimes fixtures need refinement; sometimes they don’t.
-
Follow-up and ongoing care
We stay in touch after the project is complete. Outdoor systems change over time as landscapes grow and the coastal environment does its work, so we offer Protection Plans for proactive, scheduled care, and repair and service whenever it is needed.
Repair and service, holiday décor and some other services run differently. See Repair & Service, Holiday Décor and the Protection Plan.
